I have been rediscovering Jonathan Edwards for a research paper that I am writing for an American Church History class. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Mr. Edwards and am looking forward to diving in deeper. Jonathan Edwards had a huge impact on the Great Awakening of the 18th century and his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” is famous, or maybe infamous :). Anyway, Jonathan, as a very young man (he was only about twenty years old!) wrote, “The Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards.” These are rich, enjoy!
BEING SENSIBLE THAT I AM UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING WITHOUT GOD’S HELP, I DO HUMBLY ENTREAT HIM BY HIS GRACE TO ENABLE M TO KEEP THESE RESOLUTIONS, SO FAR AS THEY ARE AGREEABLE TO HIS WILL, FOR CHRIST’S SAKE.
Remember to read over these Resolutions once a week.
1. Resolved, that I will do whatsoever I think to be most to God’s glory, and my own good, profit and pleasure, in the whole of my duration, without any consideration of the time, whether now, or never so many myriads of ages hence. Resolved to do whatever I think to be my duty and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general. Resolved to do this, whatever difficulties I meet with, how many soever, and how great soever.
I love how our pursuit of God’s glory and our own pleasure are one and the same. John Piper, author and pastor, also says “God is most glorified when we are most satisfied in Him.” Our deepest satisfaction and joy comes from resting in and enjoying Him. LOVE it! I highly recommend John Piper’s book Desiring God or any of his books for that matter.
More on Jonathan Edwards to come!
