Feliz Dia das Crianças! The Catholic church celebrates the Virgin Mary as Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida, or Our Lady of the Appeared Conception. She is the patron saint of Brasil and this is her feast day. It’s been a public holiday since 1980 when Pope John Paul II consecrated the Basilica that contains the statue. Anywho, I don’t really know much about it, but I think a lot of people head up to the São Paulo area where the Basilica is today.
But, if you aren’t Catholic, you sure do celebrate Children’s Day. Gosh, the toy stores were packed this weekend. It’s actually a big deal. Kids receive gifts and money from their parents and other family today. Most people are off work on Monday and Tuesday, and all children are out of school as well.
I’ve spent most of the weekend coughing non-stop…it’s been kind of miserable, but despite that I’ve enjoyed a lovely weekend with Cinita and Eduardo. On Saturday we went to two different malls and shopped around since it was raining. Yesterday was pretty grey and cloudy too, but it wasn’t raining, so we went to two different beaches. They were beautiful, though it was really windy and pretty chilly, so we didn’t stay too long. At one of the beaches there were two guys surfing — the waves were pretty big, and that was kind of fun to watch. Afterwards we went to grab a quick bite to eat and then went to Eduardo’s brother’s house to meet his family. His brother has a cute little boy named Gabriel. We had a nice visit there, although by last night, my voice was non-existent and I was hacking all of the other place…this morning I have more of a voice. I’m not sure what the plan is for today. I’m just kind of going with the flow!
